How Do I Open the Rear
Liftglass on my Blazer? |
 |
I went to open the liftglass on my 2000 Blazer 2dr and it
was stuck. When I pushed the button on the tailgate it made the sound like
it was unlatching but when I tried to open it, it wouldn't budge. At all. I
yanked and pushed and yanked for about 15 minutes before giving up. I've
tried a couple times a day for the past few weeks, but nothing has changed.
I tried popping it with the release on the dash with the same results. It
seems that all the screws to take apart the tailgate are located under the
glass.
Any advice?
A little plastic pin inside the rear gate has broken
off and you can do what I had to do.
Go to the dealer and pay $60.00 for a whole new actuator to get the 10 cent
pin. Pin not sold separately (sigh)
You have to unbolt the glass handle/latch assembly from the inside to start
the job of repairing it. The owners manual says that you can stick a
flathead screwdriver inside the carpet part to release the latch, but guess
what? They assume the actuator pin is still connected.
Here is the even better part....you have to break the plastic covering to
get at the two bolts securing the handle/latch to the glass. Lift the gate
handle and remove the two screws holding the inner plastic handle, then yank
the bulge behind the outside handle and unbolt the pinbolt and regular bolt.
Then you will be able to lift the glass and get the gate to open and start
your repair inside the rear gate.
One screw on each side of the plastic/carpeted gate cover and it will unsnap
from the gate.
Unplug the wire to the light switch near the latch, remove about 10 black
bolts from the backing plate, undo the inside latch lever, lift the backing
plate slowly, unplug the wire from the actuator and you will see how the
plastic pin is broken off.
I removed the actuator from the assembly and saved about a half hour of
drilling the rivets out. There are 2 screws that hold the actuator to the
actuator frame that comes with it.
As you get into the job, all this will be clear to you. If you are going to
do-it-yourself, print this out so you can go step by step. I did it twice
trying to fix the broken pin twice, then I decided to just do it right. To
do it right, buy the new actuator.
AC Delco part number 15139675
If you are somewhat technical, it takes about an hour to fix, if you're not,
let the dealer fix it. I would estimate about $200.00 at the Chevy dealer.
Thanks to Stirkle for this info.
