I don't understand what you mean by your white wire being too thick for a four-wire connector. The four wires in the flat connector should be brown, green, yellow, and the white (ground) wire should have a reversed connector from the others. Remember that the ground wire completes the circuit for all the other wires, so sometimes it is thicker as you note. (I think the heavy ground wire is there to accomodate a six or seven-pin plug which is for the addition of trailer brakes and possibly an auxilary battery.) In case you are not familiar with the color coding, green is for right-turn-signal and brake, Yellow is for left-turn-signal and brake, brown is for running lights, and as you are aware, white is for ground. If you still have any reservations about connecting the white wire, you can connect a jumper from bare metal on the vehicle to bare metal on the trailer and accomplish the same thing. In a pinch, I have used a jumper cable and some zip ties in place of the regular ground. However, DO NOT expect the ground to be completed through the trailer hitch.
