Why Doesn't My Four Wheel Drive
Work? What do all those lights mean? |
 |
Note that this for the S-10 Blazer (and
trucks) ONLY. Expect to see a similar explanation for the
larger K-5 Blazers soon.
-
On
all models of the S-10, you should be able to shift-on-the-fly from 2 HI
to 4 Hi and back just by moving the lever or pushing the button. The
owners manuals do not specify a speed range for this but generally it is
agreed that lower speeds are better.
-
The
lever and the button both move the transfer case gears to engage the front
driveshaft. Also, a mechanical ball detent is moved to port vacuum to
engage the front axle.
-
On
the lever system, the little graphic of the vehicle should light up to
indicate that the front axle has engaged. In the pushbutton models, the
light will stop blinking when the engagement of the front has taken place.
-
To
shift to 4 LO from either position, you should stop the vehicle, keep your
foot on the brake and shift the transmission to neutral. Then, in one
fluid motion, move the lever to 4 LO. Same applies to the pushbutton
except for the fluid motion part.
To go back to 2 or 4 HI, is the opposite.
-
Because the front axle is engaged/disengaged via vacuum, there may be some
delay but it shouldn't be more than a few seconds.
For both systems, to operate in 4wd, you should be on a loose surface
(dirt, gravel, snow, grass -- NOT dry pavement) to allow a little slippage
to prevent binding in the system.
